WINONA, Minn. — Come “Celebrate Christmas” with the Saint Mary’s University Concert Band on Sunday, Dec. 10, at 4 p.m. in the beautiful Page Theatre. The performance will feature diverse music of the season from Medieval times to jazzy big band sounds.

Following the stage performance, small ensembles will perform traditional carols at a cookie reception in the Ben Miller lobby.

The concert opens with a brass fanfare (Pachelbel’s “Magnificat” for trumpets and trombones), followed by an arrangement by Philip Sparke of two Medieval carols (“Coventry Carol” and “Gaudate”) and a setting of the old English Sussex carol “On Christmas Night” for small wind ensemble. The centerpiece of the performance is Alfred Reed’s powerful “Russian Christmas Music,” followed by Verne Reynolds’ masterful transcription of “O Magnum Mysterium.” The concert concludes with a medley of familiar holiday tunes by Robert Sheldon in a 1940s big band style, and Leroy Anderson’s “Sleigh Ride.”

Under the direction of Dr. Janet Heukeshoven, the Saint Mary’s Concert Band welcomes musicians from campus and from the community who enjoy performing in both large and small ensembles.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and seniors and are available by calling the Saint Mary’s Box Office, 507-457-1715, from noon to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, or online at
