Saint Mary’s University recognized outstanding students, faculty, and staff April 15 at the Student Life Awards Ceremony. Individuals who have exhibited outstanding leadership and service through co-curricular activities at Saint Mary’s were recognized.
Brother Finbar McMullen Award (presented to a Saint Mary’s community member who demonstrates him/herself to be an individual who unselfishly meets the needs of the undergraduate students of Saint Mary’s) — Karen Hemker, director of disability services at the Student Success Center
Charlene “Char” Tjaden Outstanding Resident Assistant Award — Cassie Ricker, daughter of Joseph and Pollyanna Ricker of Oakdale, Minn.
Intramural Official of the Year — William Granholm, son of Andrew and Dawn Granholm of Oak Lawn, Ill.
Cardinal Pride Award — Ricky Palermo, son of Richard and Jennifer Palermo of Westchester, Ill.; and Jenna Sullivan, daughter of John and Pam Sullivan of Woodbury, Minn.; and the Student Athlete Advisory Committee
Student Athlete Champion Award — Brother Frank Carr, FSC, member of the Athletics Advisory Board
Environmental Awareness Award — Heidi Ledermann, daughter of Pamela and Jeffrey Ledermann of Mahtomedi, Minn.
Club/Organization of the Year — Buddies, accepted by president Misty Hanson, daughter of Brad and Carol Hanson of White Bear Lake, Minn.
Outstanding Student Senator of the Year Award — Joseph Malinao, son of Jose and Elizabeth Malinao of Savage, Minn.
Club and Organization Adviser of the Year — Dr. Joseph Tadie, associate professor of philosophy and adviser of the club Soccer, Project GO!, and Badminton Club
Winona Community Service Award — Katie O’Leary, daughter of Michael and Penny O’Leary of Chicago, Ill.
Saint Benilde Award (presented to students who reach out to new members of the university community, are inclusive and inspiring, and lead by being hospitable, open and accepting) — Emily Blaser, daughter of Michael and Sara Blaser of Sycamore, Ill.
Brother James Miller Award (presented to a student who has dedicated his/her college experience to promoting the legacy of Brother James Miller, spreading the compassion of God and continually serving the community) — Rachel Waletzko, daughter of David and Patricia Waletzko of Albany, Minn.
Brother Charlie Burke Award (presented to a faculty or staff member who has made significant contributions to the entire Student Life Department. This individual has promoted the growth of the whole student through their exemplary standard of ethical service, dedication to creating developmental relationships, and their desire to promote lifelong learning) — Michael Lester, assistant athletic director and head volleyball coach
Student Service Award — Kelsi Watters, daughter of Casey Watters of Chetek, Wis.
