Sarah Gustafson, a women’s hockey player at SMU, recently took time to reflect on her four-year career with the Cardinals. The senior goaltender from Esko, Minn. finished with a 9-10 record in net this season and was 24-30-7 over her four years. She was also named MIAC Athlete of the Week twice this year. She will graduate from SMU this spring with a degree in biology.

Congratulations on being named MIAC Athlete of the Week twice this season. What does that honor mean to you?

Truthfully, it means that we played great as a team. I am honored to have been named MIAC Athlete of the Week, but in all reality my teammates made my job simple. We all have responsibilities on the ice and without them picking up sticks or moving bodies in front of me, the games could have been completely turned around.

Can you reflect back on some of your favorite things from this season?

This season was still fun even though it didn’t turn out like we hoped. I think some of the highlights would have to be sweeping Saint Ben’s and splitting with Bethel. A sweep always feels good. And when we beat Bethel, we were the underdogs, and it felt great to let people know we can compete with anyone in the MIAC. I also loved getting a chance to play against my sister this year, who plays for Gustavus.

What has it been like to be a part of Cardinal hockey over the years?

When most people think about a team it’s all about the statistics, but when I think about my team, I think about how much we are a family on and off the ice. When my team showed up to my mom’s funeral, that’s when I truly understood what it was like to be a part of Cardinal hockey. There will always be a sense of family and pride throughout the hockey program and I have been blessed to be a part of it.

Any final thoughts as you look back on your hockey career?

It’s going to be hard to hang up the skates — hockey will always be a part of who I am. The sport and the people involved in it have helped shaped the person that I am today and I could not be more thankful for it.
