Mary Lou Black Scheid and her husband, Stephen Scheid ’76 made plans to volunteer in a developing country after they retired. Unfortunately, due to Stephen’s sudden and untimely death, they were unable to realize their goal together.
But Scheid decided to continue to pursue serving in a developing country. She studied Spanish with her 11-year-old son, and they departed for the central American country of Guatemala. Scheid served as a surgical nurse and Spanish interpreter for over three years in Antigua, Guatemala and worked with teams of doctors from the United States, Europe and Canada. She continues to make several trips to Guatemala each year with medical teams from the Twin Cities.
